In 1946-47, he appeared in 40 games and averaged 4.5 points and 1.5 assists per game, although Boston finished in last place in the Eastern Division with a record of 22-38. He came from a hard-scrabble little town in southern Indiana to win the loyal and unwavering support of Celtics fans, (the most steadfast and loyal in all of sports). Bird captured rookie of the year honors in the 1979-80 season and was named to twelve NBA All-Star games, being named the All-Star game MVP in 1982. From 1984 thru 1986, Bird captured three consecutive MVP awards. Bird had superb vision, wonderfully strong hands, and, most importantly, an intutive sense of how to use his athletic gifts instantly and to their maximum effect. While leading the Boston Celtics to three NBA titles, he was twice named MVP of the NBA Finals. After an illustrious playing career, Bird went back home again to Indiana to capture Coach of the Year honors in his coaching debut with the Indiana Pacers. June 6, 1946, marked the birth of the Boston Celtics. Club owner, Walter Brown, named the team Celtics from the old Original Celtics in New York (1914-40). Arnold Red Auerbach was hired by Brown to coach the team for the 1950-51 season. When the Chicago Stags folded, its three guards names were put in a hat. Auerbach picked Bob Cousy's name out of the hat. In 1950, the Celtics chose Chuck Cooper of Duquesne as the first-African-American draft choice in the NBA.
