Corey Patterson -- By Robert Sherry

If you are going to come up with a list of the players combing the best talent, athletic ability and future potential, then Corey Patterson would easily be in the top 5, maybe even higher. The third overall pick and first high school player selected in the 1998 draft, Corey has established himself as one of the top prospects in any level of the minor leagues. At just 5'10",175 pounds,he doesn't appear to be a future slugger in the making, but he is a legitimate five tool player and future all-star. Patterson possesses the blazing speed (once timed a 6.38 seconds in the 60 yard run) and a good throwing arm in the OF while showing the ability to run down balls in the gap.

He spend his first full season playing for the Lansing Lugnuts this past year and ended up leading the Midwest League in slugging percentage (.592), extra-base hits (72) and triples (17). His .320 batting average ranked fifth in the league, and he led the Lugnuts in doubles (35), home runs (20), RBI's (79) and stolen bases (33). As a high school senior,Corey hit 22 home runs in just 123 high school at-bats all the while being one of the top wide receiver prospects in the country even though he sat out the football season so he would not to suffer any injuries.

Corey will be a great addition to the Cubs outfield next to Sosa in a couple of seasons. He has the ability to hit leadoff or in the middle of the order. My belief is that he will end out hitting in the #3 hole and be a 30/30 player for years to come in Chicago. The long suffering Cubs fans will certainly have something to cheer about while watching Patterson and Sosa in the same lineup, hitting back-to-back, starting sometime around 2002. He's a future impact player.
