Dee Gordon
Billed as the Top Prospect in the Los Angeles Dodgers system entering the season, Dee Gordon has lived up to the expectations and has emerged into one of the top shortstop prospects in all of baseball. Through August 13th, Gordon was hitting Southern League pitching to the tune of a .290 batting average with 15(2B), 10(3B), 2HR's, 33RBI's, and 43 Stolen Bases for Double-A Chattanooga. The son of former Big League All Star Tom "Flash" Gordon, Dee is primed to create his own legacy at the Major League level in the very near future. TPA You were mentioned as a prospect a lot of teams wanted in potential deadline deals with the Dodgers. What was it like playing through deadline week knowing you could have been traded at any point?
Dee Gordon To be honest, I never paid attention to it. I just play the game. I want my team to win, first and foremost. If I was traded, I would do what I needed to do to help that team to win.
TPA Tell us about your Futures Game experience. What were a couple of your best memories?
Dee Gordon Oh, it was awesome. The best part is probably just hanging out with the other players, guys like Dominic Brown, Drew Cumberland, and Ben Revere. I had a blast meeting a lot of people I hadn't seen in a while. The whole experience was a lot of fun.
TPA What's it been like getting to work with Tommy Lasorda, Maury Wills, and the other Dodgers instructors?
Dee Gordon It's been great. Tommy is a great manager, obviously, and Maury is one of my mentors. He comes out every year to work with me to help me become the potential top-of-the-order guy that I can be. Also, we have Duke Yamashita, who's the infield instructor. He's won something like eight Gold Glove awards in Japan and didn't make an error for like four straight years.
TPA What have been the biggest adjustments you've had to make as you've gone from Low-A to Double-A?
Dee Gordon The biggest adjustment from Low-A to Double-A is that the game speed is different. The pitchers here execute their pitches. They're in the zone more and you have to be ready to hit.
TPA What has been your best memory so far as a pro, both from a playing standpoint as well as from something that's happened while on the road in the minors?
Dee Gordon In the playoffs last year, I led off the game with an inside-the-park home run. I think it was against the Michigan Whitecaps. Off the field, there was this time our bus was traveling through Yellowstone Park. It was maybe my second week in pro ball, and we had to stop and sit there for four hours because they were blowing up the side of the mountain.
TPA How influential has your dad been on your career to this point? How often do you all talk during the season? What's the best advice he's been able to give you?
Dee Gordon I talk to my dad a lot, almost 3 to 4 times a week. His best advice is to just have fun and learn as much as you can.
TPA What was it like growing up having a big leaguer as a father?
Dee Gordon It was normal. He was my dad, just like everybody else's dad. It never dawned on me that he was a big leaguer. He was Dad.
TPA Growing up, when did you begin to realize you had a future as a baseball player?
Dee Gordon It was probably my first year in junior college. A lot of scouts started to come watch me play and I was like, wow. At first they were looking at the pitching, but then I realized they were starting to come see me. That was pretty cool.
TPA Did you collect baseball cards as a kid? What was it like to see yourself on a card for the first time?
Dee Gordon I didn't collect, but there were always boxes of them around our house. So it was pretty cool to see my first baseball card. I still have it.
TPA What led you to join the world of Twitter? What's that experience been like so far?
Dee Gordon I just wanted to get out there and meet some fans and interact with them. You're only as good as your fans are. It's cool. I'm the first guy on my team to do it and now the other guys are interested. Follow me at www.twitter.com/deegordon.
