Led by Dr. J, the Nets defeated the heavily favored Denver Nuggets to win the 1975-76 ABA Championship. The ABA and NBA merged on June 17, 1976. Erving's contract was sold to the 76ers on October 20, 1976.

A Charter member of the NBA, the knickerbockers played their first game on November 1, 1946, beating the Toronto Huskies 68-66. By the 1950-51 season, the Knicks had reached the NBA Finals. They would get to the Finals again in 1952 and 1953 but would not win the championship until the 1969-70 season. The stars of the 1950's teams included Dick McGuire, Carl Braun, Harry Gallatin, and the popular Nat 'Sweetwater' Clifton. A former Harlem Gobletrotter, Clifton is credited as the first African-American to sign an NBA contract.
