12-12-06 Prospect of the Day
Chris Volstad
After a storied Florida prep career which included an appearance in the Aflac All American game following his senior year, Chris Volstad was selected by the Florida Marlins with the 16th overall pick in the 2005 draft.
The Florida native was solid as an eighteen year old in his pro debut that same year combining to go 4-3 with a 2.22 ERA 13 starts between the Gulf Coast League Marlins and Short-A Jamestown.
In 2006 Volstad spent the entire season at Low-A Greensboro where he had a solid season against Sally League hitters.
The 6'7" right hander went 11-8 with a 3.08 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 152 innings.
Opposing hitters batted a fairly high .275 against him, however Volstad helped maintain his low ERA by walking just 36 batters on the season.
Look for Volstad to spend all of 2007 at High-A Jupiter where he is likely to solidify his position as one of baseball's top young pitching prospects.

12-11-06 Prospect of the Day
Danny Valencia
University of Miami product Danny Valencia had little difficulty in making the jump to professional baseball after being drafted in 2006 by the Minnesota Twins.
The 22 year old third baseman had a carrer batting average of just over .320 and averaged seven homeruns a year in his three seasons in college, two as a Hurricane and his freshman year played at UNC Greensboro.
In his first taste of baseball as a pro, Valencia batted .311 with 8 homeruns and 29 RBI's in 48 games at Rookie League Elizabethton.
Look for the Florida native to start 2007 at Low-A Beloit and likely finish the year at High-A Ft. Myers.

In his first full season of professional baseball, the 22 year old dominated the South Atlantic League.
Maloney was the Phillies third round pick in the 2005 draft.
In a Sally League leading 168.2 innings, Maloney posted a 16-9 record with a 2.03 ERA and 180 strikeouts.
He allowed just 5 homeruns and opposing hitters batted .194 against the lefty on the year.
Expect Maloney, an Ohio native, to begin 2007 at High-A Clearwater and likely finish the year at Double-A Reading.

12-9-06 Prospect of the Day
Chris Salamida
The Houston Astros had some luck in the 13th round of the 2006 draft with pitcher Chris Salamida.
The 22 year old out of Division III Oneonta State was solid in college going 8-2 with a 1.70 ERA in 11 starts.
He was even better as a pro.
Salamida dominated New York-Penn League hitters posting a 10-1 record with a 1.06 ERA in 68 innings of work for Tri-City.
Opposing batters hit just .189 against the lefty, and Salamida allowed only two homeruns during the season.
Look for the New York native to start 2007 at either Low-A Lexington or High-A Salem, and with a strong performance, have the chance to move up to Double-A Corpus Christi by the end of the season.

12-8-06 Prospect of the Day
Cyle Hankerd
Making the transition from college to the pros did not take much effort for Arizona Diamondbacks prospect Cyle Hankerd.
The power hitting first baseman made a name for himself at USC in 2006 when as a junior he led the Trojans in all three triple crown catagories batting .383 with 10 homeruns and 55 rbi's in 58 collegiate games.
Hankerd was rewarded for his effort by being selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the 87th pick in the June draft.
The Covina California native immediately turned pro and began destroying pitchers in both the Northwest League and California League for the duration of the 2006 season.
Hankerd combined to bat .381 with 12 homeruns and 61 rbi's and added 21 doubles in 72 games between Short-A Yakima and High-A Lancaster.
It's tough to tell what was more impressive, Hankerd's .384 average through 54 games at Yakima, or the 8 homeruns he hit in 18 games after being called up to Lancaster.
He was named the Northwest League MVP and was named California League Player of the Week during the final week of the season.
Look for Hankerd to possibly get a shot to start 2007 at Double-A Mobile, but more likely begin the year with a short stint back in Lancaster before earning a mid-season promotion.

12-7-06 Prospect of the Day
Chris Rahl
Chris Rahl had an outstanding first full season of professional baseball for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The College of William and Mary product finished the 2006 second in the California League in hitting, and established himself as a player to watch in the next couple of years.
The 23 year old outfielder batted .327 with 13 homeruns, 44 doubles, 8 triple, and drove in 83 runs in 131 games at Lancaster.
In addition, Rahl stole 19 bases and finished third in the league with 101 runs scored.
His performance earned him California League All-Star honors.
Expect Rahl, who was a fifth round pick back in 2005, to begin and likely spend all of 2007 at Double-A Mobile.

12-6-06 Prospect of the Day
Zach Ward
Minnesota Twins pitching prospect Zach Ward had an eventful 2006 season.
The 22 year old out of Gardner Webb College was one of the hottest pitchers in the Midwest League during the first four months of the season going 7-0 with a 2.29 ERA and 95 strikeouts as a member of the Dayton Dragons.
The Cincinnati Reds traded Ward to the Twins in a July 31st deal for Kyle Lohse, and Ward was assigned to Beloit.
Ward struggled during the final month of the season with the Snappers 1-4 with a 5.93 ERA in six starts with the club.
Expect Ward, who will turn 23 in January to begin 2007 at High-A Ft. Myers and have a chance to move through the Twins system rather quickly if he can regain the winning form he showed as a member of the Reds organization.

12-5-06 Prospect of the Day
Philip Hughes
One of baseball's top 5 prospects in the minor leagues today, Philip Hughes could become a household name by next October.
The New York Yankees selected Hughes as the 23rd overall pick in the 2004 draft, and he has been exciting the club ever since.
Only 20 years old, Hughes has a career 21-7 record in the minors with a 2.13 ERA and has given up just 6 homeruns in 237 innings over three seasons as a pro.
In 2006 the California native dominated the Eastern League going 10-3 with a 2.25 ERA and 138 strikeouts in 116 innings following a promotion from High-A Tampa where he had posted 1.80 ERA in 30 innings to start the year.
Expect Hughes to begin 2007 at Triple-A Scranton, and likely be making his Yankee Stadium debut sometime in August or September.

12-4-06 Prospect of the Day
David Davidson
The Pittsburgh Pirates bullpen may be in a position to get some help in the future from David Davidson, a late bloomer in the organization.
While still just 22, Davidson, an Ontario, Canada native, recently completed the best season of his four year professional career.
On a 2006 tour that included stops at Low-A Hickory, High-A Lynchburg, and Double-A Altoona, Davidson combined to go 3-2 with a 2.01 ERA and 96 strikeouts in 76 innings of work.
Opposing batters hit just .193 against him and he allowed only two homeruns all season.
The Pirates gave Davidson some work as a starter in the Arizona Fall League and he was hit around to the tune of a 2-2 record with a 5.17 ERA in 15.2 innings.
Expect Davidson, who was the Pirates 10th round pick, to begin 2007 back at Altoona and have a chance for an early promotion to Triple-A Indianapolis with a successful start to the season.
