Brett Myers: Taken in the first round of the 199 draft by the
Philadelphia Phillies, this 6-foot-4, 210 pound righty had no problems
adjusting to pro ball in his first full season as he established himself
as one of brightest pitching prospects in the Phillies
system.
Myers had a nice debut last year (2-1, 2.33 ERA, 27 , 17 H,
7 BB, and 30 SO in 7 games, 5 starts with their Rookie-level team) but did
even better this year on a talented Piedmont club. This 19-year-old went
13-7
with a 3.18 ERA, 175.1 innings pitched, 165 hits allowed, 69
walks, and 140 strikeous in 27 games.
On the mound, Myers has a
great makeup and personality to succeed as he advances from level to
level. When you add in a mid-90s fastball, curve, and changeup, you have
the makings of someone who could be a conistant winner and the type of a
pitcher you could build the rest of your staff around.
With many of the veteran starters gone from Philadephia
(Schilling, Ashby), the team has started to filter in some nice young
arms. Myers could turn out to be the bets of the group and could possibly
debut sometime in 2003 around the age of just 22.
